Monkey Health Explorer across North Carolina and Puerto Rico: Engaging students in health-related research
Engaging students and the community in authentic participatory science research, the Monkey Health Explorer project integrates biological data with blood chemistry, immune health, and behavior. The presenters collaborated with educators to build upon existing curriculum, incorporating data science methods to analyze the biological data. This session includes an overview of the project and curricular development, with lessons learned from the 20,000+ international contributors and participating teachers. We illustrate the value of authentic research to enlighten students in real-world projects relevant to their future careers. This session is presented by the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) in partnership with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, with insight from educators across North Carolina and Puerto Rico.
Presenters:
Dr. Julie Horvath, Senior Research Scientist, Renaissance Computing Institute, UNC-Chapel Hill
Dr. Marianne Barrier, Genomics & Microbiology Research Lab, North Carolina Museum of NaturalSciences
